Tottenham Leading Race to Sign £21m Defender Riccardo Calafiori

Tottenham Hotspur is poised to make a significant summer signing as they aim to outmaneuver Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus in securing the services of a £21 million defender.

Tottenham’s Pursuit of Defensive Reinforcement

Manager Ange Postecoglou is keen on bolstering the team’s defensive options in the upcoming transfer window, despite acquiring Radu Dragusin for £25 million in January. Dragusin’s debut performance for Spurs was challenging, prompting Postecoglou to acknowledge the need for additional defensive cover.

Postecoglou stated, “If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at,” indicating Tottenham’s intention to reinforce their backline. He emphasized the importance of acquiring players who fit the team’s style of play and contribute to its overall development.

Potential Transfer Target: Riccardo Calafiori

With Dragusin’s arrival, Tottenham is unlikely to pursue marquee options like Jarrad Branthwaite. Instead, they are considering more prudent options such as Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly, both soon-to-be free agents. Another option being explored is Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori.

Calafiori’s Impressive Performances

The Italian defender has impressed with his performances for Bologna, boasting a 90.1% passing accuracy and demonstrating composure in defense. Tottenham is reportedly at the forefront of the race to sign Calafiori, ahead of Juventus, with a reported transfer fee of £21 million.

Football analyst Ben Mattinson has praised Calafiori as a “monster” for his aerial prowess, highlighting his potential to make a significant impact in Tottenham’s backline.

As Tottenham continues to prioritize defensive reinforcement, the potential signing of Calafiori could provide a valuable addition to their squad, addressing an area of need identified by Postecoglou.
