Son Heung-Min agrees new four year deal with Tottenham

Rated as one of the finest forward players in world football, Son Heung-Min would have had no shortage of takers this summer if he pushed to leave Tottenham. The player has become a key part of the Spurs story, signed as a marquee talent under Mauricio Pochettino and developed into one of the best forwards in the world. With Spurs in freefall on and off the field for much of 2021, it was expected that the forward would not sign a new deal and instead would move on this summer or next. However, that has changed, with a new four-year deal keeping the player until 2025 agreed with the club this week.

With 107 goals in 280 games for Spurs, Son has become one of the most cherished players in recent Spurs history. His partnership with fellow forward Harry Kane is rated as one of the best in Europe. The player has yet to win a trophy with Spurs, but has won numerous individual accolades – including the Puskas award for the best goal of the year, which he won in 2019.

The player has been a key part of the Spurs program since he arrived in 2015, and now looks set to extend his stay with the club to the decade mark if he stays until the end of the new deal.

What was said about Son Heung-Min’s new contract?

Speaking to the official Tottenham website, Son confirmed his new deal by saying: “It was already a big honour to play here for six years, the club have showed me massive, massive respect and obviously I’m very happy to be here.

“It’s like home, especially with the fans, the players, the staff. There was no decision. It was easy. I’m so happy to be here and will be so glad to see the fans again soon.”

The key to the new deal was Fabio Paratici, a negotiating expert who was previously at Juventus for many years. Speaking about the new deal that will keep one of the top players in the modern history of Spurs at the club, Paratici added: “We are pleased to have agreed a new long-term contract with Son as we move towards the start of a new season and a new chapter for the club with Nuno Espirito Santo.

“Everyone can see the real positive impact he has on the club, both on and off the field, and we are delighted that he will play a part in what we are trying to achieve in the coming years.”

For fans, then, the next chat moves towards trying to keep Harry Kane. The wantaway forward has been linked with big-money moves to Manchester, primarily Manchester City, but is expected to stick around. With some interesting signings and a sign of commitment from his partner on the pitch in Son, it might be easier for Spurs to convince Kane to stick around for at least one more season as they rebuild in the post-Jose Mourinho era.
