Assessment of Cristian Romero’s Potential Departure Sparks Discussion Amid £60 Million-Plus Transfer Rumors

John Wenham, host of the esteemed Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, suggests that Tottenham Hotspur would only consider pursuing Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite if Cristian Romero were to exit the club.

Wenham, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, contends that Spurs would need to create space in their squad to accommodate another center-back. This viewpoint arises following reports linking Tottenham with a move for Branthwaite, with Everton purportedly seeking more than £60 million for the 21-year-old.

According to Wenham, a significant outlay for Branthwaite seems improbable given the caliber of center-backs already in Spurs’ ranks. “Spending around £60 million doesn’t align with our current situation,” he explains. “We’ve invested substantially in our existing center-backs, all of whom are seasoned internationals ready to contribute to Tottenham’s cause.”

Wenham speculates that Branthwaite’s acquisition could become feasible only if a player like Romero were to depart, though he sees no indication of Romero leaving anytime soon.

Despite Branthwaite’s commendable performances for Everton this season, contributing to their fight against relegation, Wenham questions whether he surpasses the quality of Romero or Micky van de Ven at this stage. With the potential financial outlay involved, Wenham believes Spurs’ priorities should focus on strengthening other areas, particularly in attack.

In light of recent developments, speculation swirls regarding the future of certain Tottenham players, hinting at potential changes to the squad dynamics.
