Tottenham are in the midst of a total squad rebuild led by the ferocious ambition of coach Antonio Conte. The Italian is known for favouring vertically build teams who can get up and down the pitch with pace and charisma. He also is known for liking players who are versatile, energetic, and capable of going the extra mile. Despite having only been back in England since the winter, it is clear that he has liked what he has seen from Yves Bissouma. So much so that the club has reportedly agreed a £30m fee for the player.
The midfielder has been regarded as one of the most interesting players outside of the elite in England. Known for his all-action style and his ability to get around the pitch and cover positions, Bissouma would be the perfect Conte midfielder. He is young enough to improve, already boasts pretty solid technique, and has a really good eye for goal when in the right form.
Though some might feel he perhaps offers much the same as other midfielder options like Pierre-Emil Højbjerg, Bissouma is a great squad option to add to this team. He can get better whilst still being more than good enough to play. In fact, one could argue that the player – and his profile of signing – is far more suited to Spurs than the high profile mistake that was Tanguy Ndombele. As the club struggle to shift the Frenchman for a good fee, they have moved to secure Bissouma before one of their rivals makes a move.
Can Yves Bissouma play a role in the Conte revolution?
He definitely looks like he will be one of the key cogs added to the team this summer. At 25, he has more than enough about him to quickly cement a starting role. His medical is expected to take place in the coming days, and the deal could be ready as soon as Thursday or Friday if all goes well.
His contract is up in 2023, hence the relatively low fee in the inflated English market. Seen as one of the key players under Graham Potter, it has only really been injury that has limited him from having a bigger impact. As the Seagulls finished ninth last year, their best ever finish in club history, it would be hard to really build on that outside of winning a cup or an unlikely European spot.
Spurs, though, can offer UEFA Champions League football and a near guarantee of being picked for his international team. Bissouma, who played over 120 games for Brighton in his time at the club, was a star signing upon arriving from Lille. Now, he has grown to be one of the most coveted midfielders in the league.
The arrival of Conte gives Spurs a leg up on deals compared to other clubs. The chance to play for a serial winner and one of the most demanding coaches in the world is a draw for any ambitious player. And in Bissouma, Spurs have a player with the utmost ambition.
