As a club in a state of upward momentum, Tottenham Hotspur must feel like a great place to work. The atmosphere in the early Antonio Conte reign – from fans and staff – could not be in starker contrast to the previous regime. While things under Nuno Espirito Santo quickly unravelled, it does not have to be that case moving forward. Conte has already put an imprint on the team, and it is expected that the January window could introduce some important new signings.
One name being heavily linked with Spurs is that of Dejan Kulusevski. The Swedish international blew onto the scene with Parma, before joining Juventus in a major deal from parent club Atalanta. So, far, though, things have not really worked out in Turin; inconsistent game time is matched by inconsistent in-game performances. The end result is a player who looks rather unsettled playing in a team that might not be the right choice for him.
An aggressive player with an excellent engine, Kulusevski feels tailor made for moving to a Conte team. His form in Italy has been patch post-Parma, but reports that Juventus are ready to move on means that Conte can finally have his shot with a player he wanted at Internazionale.
The arrival of a player the quality of Kulusevski, too, would be further proof that Fabio Paratici is making a big change. This summer, the likes of Emerson Royal and Bryan Gil arrived to help build up what is already a strong squad. The next moves, though, are very much going to be players who fit in exactly with what Conte would like.
Kulusevski has been linked with the Premier League ever since his breakout moment, and he could now get the chance to test it for himself.
Why are Juventus selling Dejan Kulusevski?
Of course, fans might wonder why the player is even on the market. If he is so talented, so generational, why would a club like Juventus cut their losses so soon?
The main reason comes down to a lack of football. Max Allegri has returned to the Old Lady, but already looks under some pretty serious pressure given the shocking start to the season. This has led to a semi-preservation mode from Allegri, who has dropped many of the younger players and turned his ire on a few of the others, including star turn Federico Cheisa.
And with Juve not seeing enough from a young player who looks low on belief, they could cash in before his Parma performances become a distant memory. Having not yet scored in the league, and having only scored in one UEFA Champions League game, Kulusevski is beginning to look a little lost out in Turin.
An exit to a club that is crying out for a young forward, then, could be the ideal move for the Swede. With Conte a clear fan and with Juventus seemingly happy to make a deal, Spurs fans could be watching Kulusevski as soon as January.
