‘You pay for it’ – Mourinho explains what made him upset in loss to Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur fell short at Anfield as Liverpool got three points in the confrontation at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool and Tottenham got to the 13th round in the status of two leaders of the Premier League. Jose Mourinho closes in the top matches, especially away, but it was almost completely indecent here: Tottenham hit the target only one time in the first half and on the other side they got eight goal attempts by Liverpool (seven of them were on-target shots).

Liverpool deserved to convert the huge pressure into a goal in the 26th minute: Mo Salah picked up the ball in the penalty area and shot it – it bounced into the goal from Toby Alderweireld.

Jose Mourinho is consoling because of the fact that his team could not capitalise on their dominance and take the lead at a crucial moment in the game.

When Mourinho was asked if his side deserved more from the game, he explained to Football.London:

Yes, of course. I think even a draw would have left us with not the best taste because we had them there to win it.

“It was not just the big chances, it was the moment of the big chances and the moment was when they were in trouble, in their worst moment, and we had it there to kill it, but we missed it.

“Then normally in matches at this level you pay for it. I thought we were going to pay for it in just taking a point but in the end we didn’t even take a point and it was very disappointing.”

Mourinho, himself, felt the better team lost after watching his team waste a couple of big chances in the second half.

Tottenham were great. Today Liverpool did not look like champions, European champions, world champions – there was no difference on the field. I told Klopp that the best team lost. He disagreed… But this is his opinion,”- said Mourinho after the match.

Klopp for sure sees things in a different way – especially regarding the statement above: –

“I thought he was joking!”, he responded.

Klopp was also asked about Liverpool’s huge advantage in terms of passes to the final third (200 such passes for Liverpool, 19 for Tottenham):

“I don’t remember those 19. That’s it. But that’s great. Different approaches, different styles. “

In that much we have seen a lot of encouraging signs in Tottenham’s play. Klopp’s team hardly fashioned any clear cut chances through the 90 minutes while we had several good opportunities that the likes of Kane would have buried nine times out ten.

After drawing with Crystal Palace and losing to Liverpool and Leicester, it has been a bad week for Tottenham, who are now down to fifth in the Premier League.

“It’s not a good week in terms of results,” stated Jose. “We could be here as the ones that broke Liverpool’s record at Anfield and go into this game from the high of this level of confidence and happiness.
