Former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Joe Lewis’s guilty plea for insider trading in the US won’t adversely affect Tottenham Hotspur.
While Lewis, the billionaire former owner of Spurs, no longer wields “significant control” over the club, his family trust still holds a majority stake in the holding company that operates Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, according to BBC News (24 January).
Lewis, 86, entered a guilty plea in an American court for conspiracy and securities fraud as part of a deal with prosecutors last month. However, Robinson, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, believes the situation is separate from the club’s affairs.
“As far as I’m aware, it’s not related to the club, but I don’t know,” Robinson stated. “I’m not au fait with the situation financially, but as far as I’m aware, I don’t think anything is related to football or the football club. So you would like to think that’s kept well separate, and well apart.”
Robinson emphasized that while the situation might not reflect positively on Lewis, Tottenham’s connection to him is well-known. However, the guilty plea itself and the offense are not directly linked to the club, despite reportedly covering a period when Lewis was still in control from 2013 to 2021.
While other clubs like Chelsea and Everton have faced upheaval due to issues involving owners or major investors, Robinson believes it’s unlikely that Lewis’s recent legal troubles will materially impact the current situation at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where the club’s finances are reportedly robust.
In other Tottenham news, there are concerns that a talented Spurs player’s career with the club may be over following a promising start.
