Despite not having a coach at present, Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to be linked to various players in the transfer market. With the likely exit of Serge Aurier, who has made clear he wants to leave – preferably for France – Spurs will need to find a new right full-back to play most matches. One name who has long been linked with the club is Max Aarons. The impressive youngster has become a key part of the Norwich side ever since he first broke through to the Canaries first-team. Previous links to Spurs exist, but it appears this summer they might look to pull the trigger.
Keen to add some more domestic talent, Spurs are being linked with a host of players from the Home Nations. Among the most interesting, though, is Aarons. The 21-year-old has been an example of consistency ever since he first broke into the Norwich first-team. First linked with Spurs at age 19, he played regularly for Norwich in both promotion seasons and in their relegation year in the top-flight.
As such, there is a clear body of knowledge about the player at Spurs. Add in his continuous improvement and development under coach Daniel Farke, and Spurs clearly see a young gem that they could continue to mould. The only question for Spurs fans, then, is who will be managing that moulding of the next generation of Spurs talent?
Aarons would make a lot of sense, with a fee expected to be in the region of £25-30m. For a young player with potential to play for England, though, that is a fair fee. He would solve a clear positional problem within the first-team, and play a role in helping Spurs find a more consistent approach to squad development.
Is Max Aarons the right choice for Spurs at full-back?
Despite being linked with numerous other teams in the top-flight, nobody has actually pulled the trigger on making the signing happen. However, with Brexit now confirmed, many of the top clubs in England are looking to buy more players who will automatically qualify – including local players. Aarons is a high player with a high ceiling, a willingness to improve, and a clear track record of development so far.
Other teams being linked, though, include the likes of Everton and Manchester United. As such, Spurs might need to move quickly if they want to try and secure a player who has been spotted by most of the Premier League. With three years left on his deal, Spurs will need to make a fair offer or wait for the player to demand an exit to try and reduce the asking price.
Given he has previously happily stuck around at Norwich, though, it likely falls on Daniel Levy and co. to meet the asking price and make an affair that is a fair compensation for a young starlet. The need to pick up first-team ready signings this summer, then, takes precedence over ‘winning’ deals as has been the obsession for the top brass as Spurs before.
