Tottenham linked with former Manchester City veteran on a free transfer

Having enjoyed a spell at Manchester City several years ago, Jerome Boateng is a player in high demand across Europe this summer. The German veteran defender is out of the first-team picture at FC Bayern, and has been told by the club that he will not have his contract renewed at the end of the season. This could mean that he is available for a free transfer, with several major clubs looking for his experience in their backline. One team closely linked with Boateng in recent days has been Tottenham.

In need of a veteran defender to help bring composure to the back line, Spurs might see value in a free transfer pickup of Boateng. However, with offers believed to arrive from other teams in Germany, as well as teams in Italy, Spain, and Turkey, it is believed that Boateng might wish to try out a new experience entirely. Paris Saint-Germain were previously linked, too, though it is believed the Parisians might look elsewhere.

As Bayern prepare to go through a squad rejuvenation and a minor rebuild, veteran talent like Boateng will be moved on to make space for the next generation. Despite his obvious qualities and his capability as a top line defender, Boateng has found it hard to get regular game time in Germany this season. As such, an exit is likely – one team that has been strongly linked in Germany is that of Hertha Berlin.

If the capital club manage to stay up, they could pounce to bring in Boateng as the marquee veteran face of their new era rebuild. Otherwise, major clubs in Turkey, as well as continentally competing teams in Italy and in Spain are believed to see Boateng as a high-value asset that they could build around.

Where will Jerome Boateng sign?

While a move to England might seem a long shot, it is believed that Spurs are seen as the best option out of the available teams. The likely exit of Davinson Sanchez means that we could see Spurs on the lookout for a new central defender. With funds likely to be tight due to a lack of UEFA Champions League football, they might see Boateng as a fine option thanks to his lack of a transfer fee.

That being said, the lack of UCL participation might make it harder for Spurs to convince the German to sign-up. Though he is believed to be open-minded about where he arrives next, a loss of football at the top table of the European game could see Spurs miss out to teams who do manage to find their spot in the UCL.

For now, though, a move to England would be seen as an outlier choice. If he does choose England, though, reports suggest that Spurs – offering the chance to live in London, play European football, and play at a quality stadium – would be seen as one of the preferred destinations for Boateng if he returns to the UK.
