While Hugo Lloris will no doubt go down in history as a modern Tottenham Hotspur icon, it is likely that his time in London is up. In his mid-30s and increasingly making erratic mistakes, there is talk that Lloris could move on and make his way back to France. Reports of reunion either with former club Lyon or a move to Paris Saint-Germain to join former Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino are the most likely destinations. It will, though, leave Spurs looking for a new goalkeeper – and the option they crave most could be heading to Germany.
Reports suggest that Spurs are especially keen on making a move for Dean Henderson, the Manchester United reserve goalkeeper who had played so well for Sheffield United. A move for Henderson could come around as the Englishman is believed to want a new challenge after failing to break through at United. David de Gea, despite an erratic form of his own, has kept his position and left Henderson unable to make the position his. As such, reports suggest that an exit in the summer is the most likely move.
For Spurs, though, they face competition from a European giant with a growing history of giving English talent a chance. Borussia Dortmund are believed to have run out of patience with the catlike but erratic Roman Burki and want to bring in a new goalkeeper. Henderson, who fits the club’s ambition to sign young talent and build a young side for years to come, would be seen as the ideal fit at BVB.
Can Tottenham make a deal on Dean Henderson before Dortmund?
The challenge for Spurs is that the ‘other’ options being most heavily linked is also part of the discussions at Dortmund. Strangely, both clubs have been linked to three goalkeepers, and all of them could be seen as a viable option. The first option is Henderson, who could be seen as a solid choice for either – young, ambitious, and proven to be good enough at Premier League level.
The other options include Italian Serie A goalkeepers. One link has been with Bartłomiej Drągowski, the Polish international goalkeeper who is at Fiorentina. Having enjoyed a breakout trio of seasons, it is believed that the Viola will look to cash in and bring in a new keeper with the money brought in. The Pole is believed to be keen on moving to a competing club, having become a star turn at a Fiorentina side who regularly struggle.
However, another link has been with Albanian international goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha. The Lazio shot-stopper has been hugely impressive in the past and is seen as one of the highest-rated goalkeepers available for transfer. With Lazio keen to move him on for the profit available, though, both Spurs and Dortmund seem keen to make a move.
So, the likelihood is that one of these three goalkeepers will arrive in London, and the other in Dortmund. Where any of the trios wind up, though, is still to be finalised.
