Tottenham Hotspur are rumored to be on the lookout for a new striker this summer as part of Ange Postecoglou’s revamp of the squad.
Tottenham Need Reinforcements in Attack
The North Londoners were left without the services of Harry Kane at the start of the Premier League season last year when the club record scorer joined Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. Given the late nature of the move in last summer’s window and the difficulty of landing a top target in January due to European competitions, Tottenham are still to splash the cash on a new striker.
Current Transfer Talks
Football Insider has claimed that Tottenham are currently in talks with Lille over a move for Jonathan David, who netted 26 times for the French side in all competitions last season. The Canadian forward is within the last year of his contract with the Ligue 1 outfit and is said to be available for a fee in the region of £20 million.
Tottenham are not alone in their interest in David, with Premier League rivals West Ham United and Italian club Roma also keen on landing the 24-year-old. David has scored 84 goals in 183 appearances for Lille across all competitions and had a solid campaign with Canada at the Copa America this summer, helping his country reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
Financial Considerations
With Brentford likely to demand at least north of £50 million for Ivan Toney following the injury to club-record signing Igor Thiago, a move for Jonathan David may seem like a relatively low-risk deal at £20 million.
Strategic Importance
There is no doubt that Tottenham need at least another forward if the club are to genuinely look to compete on multiple fronts, following their return to European action in the Europa League.
