Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly discovered the cost required to secure Lille striker Jonathan David this summer. The in-demand Canadian international has been consistently linked with an exit from Stade Pierre-Mauroy, and a move appears imminent.
Jonathan David’s Rising Profile
David made a significant impact at Belgian side Gent before joining Lille for £23.2m in 2020. His debut season saw him win the 2020-21 Ligue 1 title with Les Dogues. Over the past two seasons, David has continued to excel, scoring 26 goals and providing nine assists in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns combined.
International Achievements
The Canada international has also been instrumental in his national team’s historic run at the ongoing Copa America, helping them reach the semi-finals and securing a third-place finish against Uruguay.
Tottenham’s Interest
Tottenham, along with Manchester United, Chelsea, and West Ham, are among the clubs interested in David. According to Football Insider, Lille has set a price of £25m for the striker, despite him being in the final year of his contract and at risk of leaving on a free transfer next summer.
Postecoglou’s Striker Priority
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is reportedly “obsessed” with signing a new striker, a priority heightened after Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich and Alejo Veliz’s underwhelming debut season. Richarlison and Son Heung-min shared the striking duties last season, but Spurs are open to offers for Richarlison, and Son’s contract expires in 2025.
Potential Moves
Spurs are also monitoring Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, who would be a more expensive option than David. Tottenham has already sold striker Troy Parrott to AZ Alkmaar for £6.7m this summer, indicating their active involvement in reshaping their attacking options for the upcoming season.
