In their first World Cup qualifier since the departure of Jurgen Klinsmann, South Korea faced a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Thailand, despite Son Heung-min’s scoring contribution.
The match marked South Korea’s return to action following revelations of a rift between captain Son and Paris Saint-Germain’s Lee Kang-in during the Asian Cup, where South Korea suffered a 2-0 defeat to Jordan in the semi-finals. Son endured a dislocated finger in the incident, adding to the team’s pre-match turmoil.
Son, starting the game despite the off-field drama, found the net for South Korea just before halftime, putting them ahead with a close-range finish. However, Thailand leveled the score shortly after the hour mark through Suphanat Mueanta’s strike.
Under temporary coach Hwang Sun-hong, South Korea failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities to secure victory against a resilient Thailand defense. Despite the draw, South Korea remains atop their qualifying group with seven points from three matches, keeping their hopes alive for the 2026 World Cup.
With both teams set for a rematch in Bangkok on Tuesday, South Korea will aim to rectify their missed chances and secure a crucial victory in their quest for World Cup qualification.
