Alasdair Gold has disclosed the chants Tottenham Hotspur supporters directed at Matty Cash during the match at Villa Park on Sunday.
The relationship between Spurs fans and Aston Villa’s Matty Cash seems strained. In April 2022, former Tottenham wing-back Matt Doherty sustained a serious knee injury at Villa Park after a tough tackle from Cash, causing him to miss the rest of the season just as he was hitting form under Antonio Conte.
Cash drew further criticism from Spurs fans this season for injuring Rodrigo Bentancur in November. Bentancur had only just returned to the starting lineup after a nine-month absence due to an ACL injury. Cash’s tackle resulted in Bentancur missing several weeks due to an ankle injury, and Villa went on to win the game 2-1 despite Tottenham’s early dominance.
During Sunday’s 4-0 victory for Spurs in the Midlands, their fans took the opportunity to remind Cash of the score at Villa Park.
Alasdair Gold, speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, revealed what Spurs’ supporters were chanting to Cash during the game.
“Villa Park can be quite noisy, but they managed to make it eerily quiet,” said the Football.London journalist. “For long stretches, all you could hear were Spurs fans singing ‘Matty, Matty, what’s the score?’ towards Matty Cash.”
While securing three crucial points was the main focus for Tottenham on Sunday, leaving them just two points behind Villa with a game in hand, it’s understandable why Spurs fans wanted to tease Cash considering past encounters.
It was also a relief to hear some lighthearted banter from the Tottenham away end, especially after a minority of fans crossed the line on social media following Bentancur’s injury in November.
