For anyone who has been watching Tottenham do business in the post-Pochettino era, it is fair to say that many pounds have been wasted. The club has become consistently inconsistent in their hit rate. For every solid signing like Pierre-Emil Højbjerg, there is a player who is moved on from the squad like Steven Bergwijn. The Dutchman might have just signed for AFC Ajax for over £25m, leaving the club with a healthy bit of money to spend in the summer on a new replacement.
And according to one footballer insider, Dean Jones, this could be a ‘luxury’ signing – the kind to really kick off the Antonio Conte era in full. Qualifying for the UEFA Champions League was a huge boon for the club, and has given the playing staff and the team total confidence that they can go on to achieve great things this year. The arrival of some new squad quality, though, is going to be essential to getting the success the club wants in Europe and domestically.
According to Jones, though, the new signing that arrives will be one that gets fans off seats. Some reports suggest that Spurs are moving closer to an agreement with Paulo Dybala. The Argentine was seen as a stick-on to join Internazionale, but so far the deal has not been possible and thus he could arrive in England. Given he is on a free, it would be wise for Spurs to push the boat out to land a player who Conte highly rates.
What was said about a luxury signing for Spurs?
Speaking to popular football platform GiveMeSport, Jones gave an interesting insight into what he has been hearing around the club in terms of noise. Speaking about the potential to land a big name signing, Jones said: “I’ve been told to look out for Tottenham signing a luxury player towards the back end of the window. They’re getting their main business done now, but Tottenham always go into the window in that last 10 days, that last week, because they just love to be involved in that and see if they can get one more that boosts morale, and that’s the sort of thing that might happen this summer as well.”
That should naturally have fans excited. It has been a while since Spurs were buying elite talent, often getting used to moving on their best players instead. Having managed to get Conte through the door, though, there is a natural interest in making sure that they do everything they can to appease the Italian.
Few coaches in the game are as demanding of his front office as Conte is. For Spurs, though, having a high profile winner hold the board to account could be just what they need to get things moving in the right direction.
While it is never comfortable to read about players being moved on, it is now easy to see why Spurs have been cutting the squad this year: they are making space for some huge moves.
