For years, Chelsea has been regarded as one of the best teams in England when it comes to talent stockpiling. However, changes to the loan regulations means that the Blues can no longer get away with keeping their litany of talent sitting around all-year. Either they need to be sold on, or use their limited loan limits to get players out and playing. One player who benefitted from this was Marc Guehi. The England international was outstanding on loan at Swansea City before making the move to Crystal Palace.
Having shone in South London, Chelsea look like they might come to regret selling on the defender. Guehi was the one who brought home the Players’ Player of the Year award at Palace – not Conor Gallagher, not Wilfried Zaha, and not Michael Olise. It was a very exciting award to hand out, and it now looks like it has caught the eye of Tottenham.
Reports suggest that Antonio Conte is keen to rebuild his defence. He might look to add some young defenders who can grow into his exciting system. Alessandro Bastoni is the exciting marquee name, with him being an ex-Conte player and someone who won the Serie A title with the Italian. Guehi, though, would be perfect as part of the back three and could play central or on the right-hand side with ease.
He would make an excellent hire, and it would be double-wonderful to leave Chelsea wondering what might have been. Spurs have grown used to losing out to Chelsea in the past – with an ex-Blues coach in the dugout, though, they have one of the most inspiring coaches in world football.
Players would love to play for Conte, and it sounds like Guehi might be equally interested.
Spurs keen to make Chelsea pay for giving up on Guehi
If Spurs can make the deal stick – and it will not be cheap – it would mark an excellent start to the summer transfer window. Conte has a wonderful attacking line-up to use, but it is clear the team needs more defensive quality. The arrival of Guehi would add a modern, ball-playing defender with pace. He is young enough to improve, but good enough already to start every week in the league setting.
As such, the decision to bring in the former Chelsea defender would be a no-brainer. Though it might be hard to convince Palace to sell for anything under £30m, the signing is one that Spurs fans would be keen to see take place. Guehi is an intelligent, athletic, and technically adept defender who can only get better given his young age.
After showing how good he is with Palace for much of the last season, fans should be very excited indeed to see what Guehi can do in a white shirt should he arrive in the summer to come.
A high-class operator who would make a great addition to the Conte project, Spurs fans can enjoy the signing doubly if it means Chelsea are left wondering what if for years to come.
