With ambition at Tottenham going up and up, rumours of big name signings no longer feel like gambits to sell season books. Clubs without ambition tend to use these kinds of rumours in late May and early June to get fans buying season books and coming back the next season. However, clubs without ambition also do not appoint Antonio Conte. With that in mind, the sheer volume of big names being linked with a move to Spurs should excite fans.
One name that has come up in recent days, though, is sure to cause some uncertainty among Spurs fans. On one hand, the player is a world-class winger in their prime who would be perfect in this Spurs team. On the other hand, they used to play for Arsenal.
The player in question is Serge Gnabry. The German has reportedly started to look at options outside of Bavaria, and would be keen to try out something new. Having won everything he can with FC Bayern, Gnabry is expected to consider his options as opposed to sign a new long-term deal to stick around in Germany.
While the exit of a player at the peak of his powers and with more time to improve would seem bizarre, Bayern might have little choice. The winger is out of contract in 2023, and looks almost certain to move on from the club if a new deal cannot be agreed. That should be something that concerns Bayern fans, as several players – including Niklas Sule and most importantly Robert Lewandowski – are keen to move on from the club.
Sule has already agreed a deal to go to rivals Borussia Dortmund, while Lewandowski wants to try out a new league. Could Spurs benefit from Bayern this summer, as well?
Gnabry deal viewed as challenging, but possible
With the player keen to play in the UEFA Champions League, and with a supposed interest in a return to England, Spurs tick both boxes. They also offer the chance to live in London, to work with a top coach, and to play with stars such as Harry Kane. While the Arsenal factor might confuse matters, Spurs offer arguably the best choice of any team in England.
They can make space for Gnabry in their front three, which other linked teams like Liverpool and potentially Manchester City would struggle to do. Arsenal and Manchester United are likely or guaranteed to miss out on UCL football. For Spurs, this summer could offer a unique chance to land some very impressive talent without having to spend through the nose.
Gnabry would offer the flair, invention, excitement, and capacity for goals that could be crucial in the next phase of this Spurs project. Though it would be somewhat controversial given his links, the world class winger would make an outstanding addition to the Spurs squad.
Modern football often has players going to rivals and playing for rivals of former clubs. Given what he can do on the pitch, we suspect most Spurs could look the other way. After all, Harry Kane used to run around with red dye in his hair and that turned out OK.
