Tottenham keen to empty squad of bloat and flops in summer

Like almost every other club in the Premier League, Spurs have made some mistakes in the transfer window. However, while the early Mauricio Pochettino era felt like it had far more wins than busts, the post-Poch era has felt less consistent. Despite some fine signings in January, some fans are nervous that future windows might follow the same hit-and-miss template that so many fans want to escape. Reports around the club suggest that this summer will be just as much about outgoings as incomings, though.

Too many players have loitered around the club without contributing enough. A group of players who were signed for big fees have done very little in a Spurs shirt. This has led to some debate that Antonio Conte, if he sticks around, would rip up the squad and begin anew. Even if Conte goes, though, which would be likely if Spurs cannot make the UEFA Champions League, a squad rebuild is coming.

Indeed, reports suggest that Spurs have as many as eight first team players facing the chop. Of course, this will be easier said than done, as the club will need to find willing buyers to take the players off their hands. If buyers can be found, though, several names will be out the door quickly.

Will Spurs rebuild the squad in full this summer?

With some Spurs fans feeling like the club has been in relative stasis since Pochettino left, this summer could change everything. A series of big name exits will take place, whilst a few new names will arrive. Conte has often preached the desire to have a tighter squad where he can rely upon each player to do their part. Supplementing the team with academy talent when needed is, to Conte, a more suitable choice than making space for squad fillers who cannot be trusted.

As such, several big names are likely to be on the transfer list for Fabio Paratici to deal with. One name who is certain to leave is Steven Bergwijn. Despite some big moments in his Spurs career, the Dutchman has not settled and has failed to convince Conte top give him much game time. Ajax are keen to bring the player back to the Netherlands.

Another almost certain exit from the club will be Tanguy Ndombele. The midfielder was a club record signing, but from the day he arrived it felt off. Inconsistent performances and a petulant nature seen him depart for Lyon once again, and he will return this summer as OL look likely to miss out on Europe entirely.

Other players who look very likely to be moved on would include Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks, and Davinson Sanchez. Most of these players arrived at Spurs with big reputations and rich potential. Few, though, have managed to live up to the expectation set on them when they arrived. As such, Conte is keen to rip things up and start again.

Even if the Italian moves on, though, it appears the  top brass at Spurs are keen to rebuild the squad from the ground up.
