Tottenham keen to make move for Villarreal pairing

Speak to any Tottenham fan, and they will tell you that part of the clubs squad make-up problem is a lack of defensive zeal. The club has long been regarded as soft at the back, with the days of the Toby Alderweireld-Jan Vertonghen partnership long gone. Spurs have grown used to also seeing their team lack penetration in the final third. Both are pretty major issues for a club that has ambitions of being back in the UEFA Champions League in the coming seasons.

With that in mind, Spurs fans might be keen to see reports they are in for two players key to Villarreal’s run to the UCL last four. The two players in question are Pau Torres and Arnaud Danjuma.

The former is regarded as among the best defenders in the world. At 25, he has become a dominant force within La Liga and played a huge role in helping Villarreal lift the UEFA Europa League in 2021 followed by a close run thing with Liverpool in the last four of the UCL. A prominent defender who also can score goals – as he displayed against Juventus in the knockout round – Torres would be the ideal addition to this Spurs team.

Equally capable in a back two or a back three, he could easily play on the left-hand side either way. He has excellent technique, is good in the air, boasts find recovery pace, and can read a game extremely well. At 25, too, he could improve further. In fact, Spurs were keen to land Torres last year but he stuck around to see what he could do in the UCL with his hometown club.

Now, with the Yellow Submarine likely to miss out on Europe, he is spying an exit.

Who is Arnaut Danjuma?

The other player in question is Danjuma, a Dutch international who played for AFC Bournemouth. Spurs officials were keen to see the player in action, and were suitably impressed by his performances against Liverpool. Boasting excellent pace and acceleration, he also is a well-regarded dribbler who has improved his goal tally this season. 16 goals in 34 games in the league has been very impressive indeed, and could play a big role in Spurs seeing him as the ideal addition.

With a likely 3-4-3 setup to come, he would provide meaningful competition alongside Lucas Moura to Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-Min. Danjuma has already tasted Premier League football, and impressed his South Coast teammates when he was able to stay fit.

If Spurs want to progress then getting their hands on a pair of players like Danjuma and especially Torres could be vital. However, most reports suggest that Spurs need to make it to the Champions League first before either player would consider the move.

Danjuma has been linked with a move back to England more or less since he departed, and Spurs could offer him a chance to return to the UK in the summer. Torres, though, would be among the biggest coups in recent Spurs transfer history if they could land him.
