In what was one of the more confusing signings of the Jose Mourinho era, Joe Rodon looks to be finished at Spurs. The Wales international was signed and then barely given a chance, and has spent much of his time in North London sitting on the bench. Game time has been rare under Antonio Conte, too, and it now looks like the Italian has made the choice to cut Rodon loose from the club this summer.
The defender has not been much of a feature for Spurs since he signed, and has been more or less bombed out under Conte. Some small amount of game time arrived under Jose Mourinho and then under Nuno Espirito Santo, but it was nowhere near enough to suit all parties. However, his game performance for Wales has been impressive enough that Spurs should have little problem finding an English or German club to make a move for the player.
His excellent performance in a 2-1 win against Austria, setting up a World Cup play-off with Scotland or Ukraine, was enough to convince Robert Page to keep calling him up. The Wales manager, though, will want to see one of his most important players move on and start playing football somewhere else in the UK – or abroad.
At 24, Rodon needs to find a club that can give him regular game time and make sure he can continue to develop. Sitting on the bench at Spurs will do nothing for the ex-Swansea City man, and he should do himself a favour and move on before he sticks around too long and begins to stagnate.
As the transfer window approaches, Rodon is expected to be one of the first out the door as Spurs reshape their squad overall.
Rodon a victim of form from other players
Though a young player with decent technical qualities and an impressive stature physically, Rodon has found it hard to play at Spurs. A mixture of formational changes and then the form of the likes of Eric Dier has made it nigh-impossible to get himself into the team and see regular playing time. This, then, is very likely to see the end of a player who has never really been given the chance to play.
Premier League interest is expected to be high, with both newly promoted and regular mainstay clubs in the bottom half keen to make a move for the defender. Though he probably lacks the level to make it at Spurs, there is little doubting his quality when it comes to the basics of defending.
Spurs could then use the money accrued by selling Rodon to make sure they can give Conte the help he needs to build the squad he desires. With as many as six senior signings expected to arrive this summer, it would be crucial for the likes of Rodon to get a move on and take their career a step further in a new place.
