For Tottenham fans, it would be easy to forget all about Cameron Carter-Vickers. The defender came through the youth system at the club and has enjoyed a dizzying number of loans. Often stuck in the Championship, the USMNT cap has found himself on loan once again – this time up in Scotland with Glasgow Celtic. Arriving in a new-look Bhoys team aiming to claim back the league title, Carter-Vickers has been nothing short of incredible.
New Celtic coach Ange Postecoglou was keen to grab the Southend-born defender, and he duly arrived late in the transfer window. It’s a good thing he did, too, as ‘CCV’ has been involved in several vital goals for the club. Alongside being a solid attacking threat at times, Carter-Vickers has been the mainstay reason in creating an excellent defensive unit in Scotland.
Alongside fellow ex-Spurs man Joe Hart, the pair have played a crucial role in turning things around at Celtic in a big way.
After Sunday, though, the Bhoys might be in a double-edged sword situation. At Carter-Vickers banged in a left footed finish, as instinctive as it was impressive, Celtic won 2-1 at Ibrox to consign Rangers to back-to-back Glasgow Derby defeats. It leaves Rangers six points off with a massively inferior goal difference, and it could mean Celtic reclaim the Scottish title and thus access to the UEFA Champions League.
For Celtic, though, that goal for Carter-Vickers means two things. One, a potential league title and thus access to the funds needed to keep him outright. Secondly, though, it has given Carter-Vickers a platform to remind other English teams just how good he is.
Following some good performances in the Championship, Carter-Vickers has now gone to a demanding club with European aspirations and performed. Heads have been turned.
Will Carter-Vickers stay in England or move to Celtic?
Reports in Scotland suggest that the Bhoys are close to agreeing a deal for Carter-Vickers to stay, but there is no guarantees just yet. Indeed, reports in England that both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace are keen to do a deal for the player. So, too, are Leicester City. This leaves Spurs with a tough choice; do they sell the player to Scotland for a lower fee, or sell him to a competitor for a larger deal?
For Carter-Vickers, it is important that the next move is right. Each loan has often ended with fans wanting to see him stick around, only to see him move on to another club. His form in Scotland has been incredible, but if Celtic go on to lift a domestic treble it could leave the USMNT defender with nothing left to accomplish in Glasgow.
For Spurs, it will be a challenge to decide. Though it is highly unlikely that even such a good season in Scotland could see him enter first-team reckoning, Spurs will be able to fetch the best price they arguably ever could for the defender.
Celtic fans have made it clear – they want him to stay. Spurs fans, what would you prefer happens? Would you like to see Carter-Vickers stay, move on to England, or stay in Scotland?
