Tottenham Hotspur linked with shock Harry Kane contract talks

When a player spends much of the previous summer, and then an entire summer, trying to leave a club, it tends to leave a negative taste in the mouth for everyone involved. However, some clubs know that the player trying to leave might be better than anything that they could hope to sign. In those circumstances, it’s often better to find an agreement that brings everyone back into line with one another.

This appears to be the case with Tottenham Hotspur, as they try to agree a deal with wantaway club captain Harry Kane.

Kane, 28, was expected to move on this summer after it was made clear that he wanted to get out of the club and try something new. As Spurs fell away from their peak of the Mauricio Pochettino era, the Premier League club tried to convince stars like Kane to stick around. And while Son Heung-Min has signed a new deal to stick around, Kane looked almost certain to leave for a Premier League rival.

With Manchester City pulling out, though, there was little chance for Spurs to make the deal that they wanted. Chelsea instead signed Romelu Lukaku, and Manchester United were arguably never seriously interested. Kane, though, was offered to various clubs abroad with few being interested. With his age and his injury record in mind, few clubs were keen to blow the money needed to pick Kane up.

As such, the player was left with the embarrassing risk of having to return to Spurs with no deal agreed for himself in the long-term. This has led to more than a few discussions about what happens next for the player, and it has now been agreed that he will stick around at Spurs for the rest of the season.

Will Harry Kane sign a new deal?

Interestingly, discussions have appeared regarding Kane moving on from his wantaway desires. Instead, he could pick up a new deal and move on from any talk of an exit, with a huge bumper pay rise expected to arrive. However, some fans might worry that this is simply kicking the can down the road with regards to an exit. The player signed a new deal without an exit clause, and now wants to leave with several years left on his deal.

Could signing a new contract without a release fee again leave Spurs wondering when Kane will next issue a desire to leave?

For some fans, it might be best to simply leave it as-is and get what they can for the England captain next summer. With fans returning to most countries, it is expected that next year will see a healthier market and thus more teams who they could get involved in a bidding war.

Seen as the ultimate penalty box striker, Kane also provides much more outside the box. it could be argued, though, that his talismanic presence in North London makes him more valuable to Spurs than any other club. Signing a new long-term deal, then, could be a sign of commitment – or it could simply be trying to find a happy solution for all parties until next summer.

Either way, the player has gone from demanding an exit to potentially signing a new deal.
