Having enjoyed a strong resurgence into relevance under Jose Mourinho, Spurs look a long way improved from the mess the Portuguese first took over from. By creating a hugely exciting counter-attacking team, Spurs have used the prolific nature of front duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min to outstanding effect this year. However, it would be fair to say that in terms of depth there is a lack of quality. After Kane, the club has Carlos Vinicius; a strong, committed Brazilian forward who is by no means prolific. That’s why talk of a move for Southampton forward Danny Ings is so intriguing.
The England man has been linked with a move back to a European contender since he first arrived on the South Coast. A lifelong Saints fan, Ings has lived the dream; playing for his boyhood club, scoring goals en masse, and making a really significant improvement in almost every single aspect of his game. However, it would be fair to say one thing: Ings has yet to see Saints make good on their huge potential.
Despite improvement in almost every way under Ralph Hassenhuttl, it would be fair to say that Southampton are not a true contender for honours. A chance to move to a London side that is in need of another forward to partner with Kane, or cover for him, and the chance to play in Europe again, might be just what Ings is looking for if he wishes to reignite his career at the very highest level.
Is Ings ready for a second chance at the big time?
Having missed out on the chance to make it big under Jurgen Klopp due to injury, Ings has spent a lot of time trying to convince the top of the football tree he is good enough. The talented front man has always worked hard, but his inability to stay prolific in front of goal has limited his chances of moving higher up the food chain. At Saints, though, he has managed to combine his goalscoring prowess with his hard work on a more weekly basis.
Though injuries will always be a concern with a player who has missed the gametime that he has, there is no doubt that Ings is a top quality player. The ability to revive himself physically and stay fit has mostly been proven over the last 18 months, albeit with a few injuries since. Given Spurs need a reliable player who is physically durable and able to come in and out of the side, Ings would make perfect sense.
He would instantly solve a Mourinho issue with the team, making it much more likely that they could consistently compete. Though other issues definitely exist within the Spurs squad, having a proven, full-time third option for either Son or Kane would be ideal.
And given Ings plays a style that would complement either player, it might not be long before we see Spurs make the most logical move they could at this moment in time.
